When I first started writing lyrics, I had nothing to guide me. There were no books out there on how to write lyrics, no rules or guidelines. I was writing blind, hoping the words were good. I showed the words to my older brother.

In 5th grade my poem won a state-wide school contest and was published. Other works of mine have been published in local zines, such as "Blood and Ink," and my lyrics have been translated and published in a French magazine in Paris called "Bric-a-Brac."
I also had the pleasure to study under such popular composers as Jack Smalley ("Charlie's Angels," "The Last of the Mohicans," "Murder She Wrote," and "Twilight Zone") and Thom Sharp ("King of the Hill," "City Slickers," "When Harry Met Sally"). Overall, a great little guide to writing lyrics. In fact, I have a drama presentation tomorrow for my acting class of 30 seconds of song and dance about my summer and I think I learned a few useful tips for preparing that from your book! Everything seemed to be well organized and succinct. My REALLY favorite part of the whole thing is the Tips and Tricks section because the questions/issues you raise are questions that I HAVE, but never realized I had them until you asked them... Lastly, as a budding linguist, I appreciate your discussion of voiced and unvoiced consonants in Tip #3. MR. BARANY, WELL DONE!
